OCAD Summer Projects Continue
Summertime was the perfect time for Olivet College of Art & Design (OCAD) students to hone their design skills with independent projects -- from building websites to international design competitions.
By not having to devote time to any other courses or classroom assignments, a number of OCAD students were able to tackle a larger project: building a websites for an international mission conference, and for Olivet Theological College & Seminary. The completed conference website, http://www.tokyo2010.org, enables conference participants to register and obtain information about the event, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1910 World Missionary Conference.
The website for the Olivet Theological College & Seminary uses the latest programming and design trends to make the website compatible with an array of internet browsers.
“The website building projects this summer have been a great opportunity for me to use what I learned from the Usability course I took last semester,” said second year student Ms. Jooyoun Nam. “I’ve also learned a lot and enjoyed working with the first-year students.”
This summer Ms. Ahyoung Lee, a third year student at OCAD, entered an international design competition and won top honors. The competition, held in South Korea, was intended to promote community safety throughout the country and awarded designers with the top poster ads and photography pieces. Ms. Lee’s submission was a poster denouncing the cyber crime of posting obscene content and profanity online, based on internet laws in South Korea. Her work was selected among many entries based on concept and design.
“I’m so thrilled to have my poster recognized among so many other designs. It is exciting that a design can make a difference in sending a message,” Ms. Lee said in an interview. “As internet use increases, many important social issues will follow, so it is very fulfilling to be able to participate in this campaign and deliver a message using what I learned at OCAD.”
“The skills and experiences I’ve learned from OCAD are helping me pursue my goals for social change,” she added.
After numerous sketches and conceptual brainstorming, Ms. Lee used the graphics editing programs Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create her poster. She hopes to use this competition as a stepping stone to pursue future work in design ministry after graduation.
